Fly Fishing in Iceland
From a single day on the river to a full week at a dedicated fishing lodge on one of the world's great salmon rivers — ILE offers the complete range, personally arranged and seamlessly integrated into any journey.
Why Iceland
A Fly Fishing Destination Like No Other
Iceland's rivers are among the cleanest, least fished, and most productive in the world. For the serious angler, this is a pilgrimage. For the curious first-timer, it is an introduction they will never forget.
Wild rivers, remarkable catch rates
Iceland produces outstanding numbers of Atlantic salmon every season. The country's short, cold rivers — fed by glaciers and geothermal springs — funnel fish into concentrated, fishable beats. Many of Iceland's top rivers record catch rates that anglers from Norway, Scotland or eastern Canada consider extraordinary.
West Rangá, the river at the heart of our primary fishing experience, is consistently ranked among Iceland's most productive salmon rivers — and in peak season, among the most prolific in the North Atlantic. Guests who have fished the world will recognise immediately that this is something rare.
Full-service lodge immersion
The West Rangá lodge experience is not a day on the water with a packed lunch. It is a fully catered, fully guided residential stay at a dedicated fishing lodge sitting directly on the river bank. Every practical detail is handled — rod allocation on private beats, professional riverkeeping guides, waders and equipment available on site, gourmet meals, and accommodation built specifically to serve a fishing party at rest.
The lodge atmosphere does what few fishing lodges anywhere manage: it is genuinely comfortable, without being soft. Sheepskin throws and a wood-burning stove. River maps on the walls. The sound of moving water twenty metres from your room. For the right guest, this is close to perfect.
The range ILE can offer
Not every guest travelling with fishing in mind wants a week at a lodge. Some want an afternoon session folded into a multi-day tour — a few hours on the river, a fish landed, and a memory made. Others want to build their entire itinerary around the water. ILE can arrange the full spectrum, from a single guided afternoon to a dedicated seven-night fishing journey.
We work with the best fishing operation in the country and have access to private beats on rivers that independent travellers simply cannot book. This access, arranged through ILE, is a genuine differentiator — and a compelling reason for an angling guest to come through you.

Seasonal Calendar
Iceland's fishing season is compact and productive. Timing depends on species and experience.
Salmon season on West Rangá runs approximately mid-June through mid-September, with July and August as peak months. Beat allocation is strictly limited and fills early — many rods on the best beats are pre-booked by returning guests. Advise clients to book at least six months in advance for prime weeks.
Trout and Arctic char offer a more flexible season, with good fishing from late May through October. The Þingvellir lake and ION beat are particularly productive for char in June and September when salmon beats are either not yet running or winding down.
Where we fish
The Rivers
Each river we use offers a distinct experience — we select based on species, timing, and what the guest is looking for.
West Rangá
Iceland's most consistently productive salmon river. Fourteen rods on private beats, managed with a strict catch-and-release ethic on most pools. The lodge sits directly on the bank — you step out of your room onto the river. Catch rates here regularly exceed those of famous Norwegian or Scottish rivers in the same season.
Lake Þingvellir & ION Beat
The setting alone justifies the journey — Þingvellir is where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of breathtaking drama. The lake and the ION beat produce exceptional trophy brown trout and Arctic char. Afternoon fishing here can be paired with the wider Golden Circle for guests who want fishing as one memorable element of a full touring day.
Leirá River
A superb catch-and-release salmon river within easy reach of Reykjavík, making it ideal for guests on shorter schedules or those who want a day of proper salmon fishing without committing to a lodge stay. Accessible for guests with limited fly fishing experience — guides here are patient and instructional, and a first salmon is well within reach.

How to Pitch It
The talking points that convert an angling guest — and the questions worth asking first.
Lead with West Rangá's catch rates and the scarcity of the allocation. Serious anglers know the name — if they've heard of it, they'll know what private beat access here means. If they haven't, tell them: it consistently competes with Norway and Russia's best rivers, at a fraction of the cost and without the logistics. Combine with the midnight sun angle — fishing at 11pm in full daylight is a genuine novelty even for guests who have fished everywhere.
Reframe it as the experience, not the fishing. "Standing in a clear Icelandic river catching Atlantic salmon" — that's what they'll tell people about. Emphasise that no prior experience is required, that guides teach everything on the day, and that a half-day session fits cleanly into any multi-day tour. The Leirá day session, in particular, is designed for this guest: it's a first salmon, not a serious expedition.
Always ask. Many guests who describe themselves as interested in "nature" or "outdoors" would be open to a fishing session if it were suggested — they just don't think to ask. The words to listen for: hunting, fishing, wildlife, the outdoors, Scotland, Norway, New Zealand. Any of these in a pre-trip conversation is worth a follow-up question about whether fly fishing is something they've tried or would like to.
Lodge stays on West Rangá in peak season (July–August) should be advised as early as possible — many prime weeks are gone 6–12 months in advance. If a guest is serious about fishing in a specific year, the time to enquire is now. Day sessions are more flexible, but availability on the best beats should not be assumed. Contact the ILE team early and we will confirm what is possible.

Internal — Not for Client Distribution
- Our primary fishing partner is Iceland Outfitters. This name does not appear on any client-facing material, the public website, or any document that leaves ILE hands. Clients book through ILE — we are the operator of record.
- ILE has permission from Iceland Outfitters to use their website content and photography in internal ILE presentations. Do not re-publish or distribute Iceland Outfitters images to clients as ILE's own photography.
- West Rangá beat access is secured through our operating relationship. Independent travellers cannot book these specific beats directly — this access is a genuine ILE differentiator worth emphasising to agents.
- Rod fees on prime salmon beats are substantial — West Rangá is a premium product. Position accordingly: this is not a leisure fishing trip, it is a world-class angling experience. Price conversations should reflect that.
- For beat availability, permit costs, and current rod allocation, contact the ILE operations team before quoting any client.
- Leirá catch-and-release sessions are arranged via a separate partnership. Confirm seasonal availability before including in any itinerary June and beyond.
